Hatching is a drawing technique used to create tonal or shading effects by drawing many closely spaced parallel lines. It is commonly used in hand-drawing and is rarely used by computer graphics, except in a few specific situations.

The word hatching is derived from the Old French word “hacher” which means “to hack”. It is most commonly used in two contexts:

Artistic couch drawing: to create tonal or shading effects in a drawing.

Technical drawing: to annotate or highlight a drawing by means of lines or cross-hatches.
